Marlies van Boekel lives and works as a visual artist In Leiden. She makes paintings and also often works on a project basis with photography or film. Water is one of the main themes in her work. It started in 2003 with a photo of her daughter swimming underwater. In 2007, she spent a year photographing the variations in reflections at Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden, a project that ended with an exhibition at the museum. In 2017, she filmed the process of De Lakenhal's new building from her garden. The video is now in the museum's collection. She also initiated a number of social projects, such as the video recording 'Looking for Paradise' with Aldith Hunkar as the mother of a drowned refugee and 'Art=', a speaking chorus with refugees about art’s connecting significance. From 2019, she took numerous photographs of the reflections in the Singelpark. She often turns the photos around, allowing the viewer to experience reality again with fresh eyes.
